"Byrrh" Ceramic Advertising Ashtray / Change Tray - Moulin des Loups Orchies France - '50s

Funny circular ashtray (or change tray) of French production, dating back to the 1950s. Manufactured by the old Moulin des Loupes kilns of Orchies, in the Pas-de-Calais department, established in 1886 at the initiative of brothers Emile and Joseph L'HerminĆ© Declercq, in a region of centuries-old ceramic tradition, the little dish displays on the inner border red promotional writings of the renowned Byrrh distillery, founded in 1866 in Thuir, in the PyrĆ©nĆ©es-Orientales department, by haberdasher brothers Pallade and Simon Violet, become famous thanks to its quinine elixir with tonic and digestive qualities, a real Belle Ɖpoque must, publicized by incessant advertising campaigns, and remained in vogue until WWII. Slightly worn out at the edges, signed by minor dents due to use - see photos -, the piece, branded on the bottom with the typical Orchies wind mill, holds, however, well readable letterings, and all the allure of the ā€œlivedā€ object: a real occasion for all collectors of French-made promotional gadgets!
