«Quando folgora il dannunziano solleone / e con il suo calore sveste le gonne, / sia in istrada che sotto l’ombrellone a nudo puoi veder belle le gambe, / a Marina tutte belle son le donne; / attenta però, la più debole soccombe. […]» (“When the summer heat of D'Annunzio blazes / and with its ardor it strips off the skirts, / both in the street and under the umbrella bare you can see pretty the legs, / in Marina all beautiful are the women; / watchful, however, the weakest one succumbs. [...]”) It's with four funny six-line stanzas that Renzo Caprili closes its photographic book dedicated to Marina di Pisa, flourishing seaside resort in the shadow of the Leaning Tower. Printed in short run in 1985, the volume, nowadays an absolute rarity for the collector, consists, essentially, in a large selection of pictures and curiosities about the Bocca d'Arno (“Mouth of the Arno”) of yesterday, from the late 19^th century to the threshold of year 2000. Early 20^th century postcards are thus compared with photos from 80 years later, on the lookout for visual comparisons between the old village and the new town, with the accompaniment of lively, at intervals caustic, captions by the author. Full of unmissable anecdotes, Marina di Pisa: ieri... oggi (“Marina di Pisa: Yesterday... Today”) comes an absolutely unique source for the local history connoisseur, a data collection essential for all lovers of the ancient “Pisan Viareggio”, where great industrials and talented artists used to spend long summers, in the warmth of the sun and in the cool of the pines. The specimen for sale, well preserved, still holds its original dust jacket - this last one, just presenting a small tear at the upper margin and some surface scratches due to use. On the inside, only some scattered foxing is to report, such as, however, not to disrupt either the text readability or the enjoyability of the photos: a real treat for all Tuscan history enthusiasts!
