Gerd Böttger, Narvik im Bild. Deutschlands Kampf unter der Mitternachtssonne – Gerhard Stalling – I° edizione – 1941
Interesting essay by Gerd Böttger on the renowned naval and land battle of Narvik (April-June 1940), fought between Wehrmacht and Norwegian troops, these last ones supported by British, Polish and French defense contingents. Furnished with a vast photographic apparatus edited by the author itself, with shots of men, arms and episodes of one of the key actions of the Norwegian campaign, the research, consisting of 19 chapters besides foreword, comes bound in an elegant half-linen, round back hardcover, reporting, however, a quite heavy wear at the panels (several stains and ghosting signs, damaged angles, and edges, at some points, consumed) and a spine with worn out joints, partially repaired with paper tape (see photos). On the inside, despite traces of drawing and erasure on the frontispiece and some images (at pages 21, 23, 25, 35, 38, 47, 48, 49, 53, 63, 69, 71, 84 and 91), likely post-war “customizations” by some kid, the book remains enjoyable and perfectly readable, and shows, on the front flyleaf, an amazing original war-time dedication, written, in an elegant Carolingian, by a Kriegsmarine officer to a sailor, on the occasion of his birthday: «Dem M.A. Gefr. / Rudolf Six / zum Geburtstag, / 1./Mar.Flak.Abt.256. / Standort, den 6.7.1943. / [signature] / Ob.Lt.M.A. und. Batterieschef.» (that is to say: “To the Naval Artillery Lance-corporal / Rudolf Six / 256th Naval Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion - 1st Battery / War Zone, 6th July 1943 / [signature] / Lieutenant junior grade and Battery Commander”) A real treat, for the bibliomaniac as for the Wehrmacht 1939-1945 militaria collector!
