British Army ā€œMk II Light Anti-Gas Respirator Haversackā€ Gas Mask Carrying Pouch – Waring & Gillow (1943) – WWII

Interesting gas mask haversack carrier of British manufacture, dating back to WWII. Designed for the transport of the Light Anti-Gas Respirator, compact gas mask model introduced in 1943, the pouch, made of olive green waterproof cotton canvas, shows two side pockets with snap fastener, upper flap with webbing closure strap and double carrying possibilities: horizontally, by means of the bent brass hooks sewn on the back, for the attachment to the soldier's waist-belt, or vertically, through the two large side loops and the khaki adjustable shoulder strap, mounted as in photo. On the bag inside, a vertical divider and a small pocket on the bottom were at soldier's disposal for housing the gas mask's different accessories. Some stampings on the flap's inner side tell us finally about the device type for which the haversack was intended (Ā«LIGHTĀ»), equipment version (Ā«IIĀ», or rather ā€œMk IIā€), producer (Ā«W & G LTD. 1932Ā», that is Waring & Gillow of Hammersmith, London) and production period (Ā«S 8/1943Ā»), proving the piece's authenticity. Except for some tarnish signs on the hardware - see photos -, and the presence, on side pockets, of snap fasteners' ā€œfemaleā€ components probably replaced in the postwar period (they are, indeed, branded Ā«FIOCCHI LECCOĀ»), the pouch is sold in good general conditions.
