"Omega" Acetylene Gas / Carbide Bicycle Lamp - Société La Française Diamant - Nickel-Plated Brass - '10s
Interesting acetylene gas bicycle lamp, of French production, dating back to the early 1910s. Manufactured by the historical industries of cycles and accessories “La Française - Diamant” of Paris, the lantern, entirely of nickel-plated brass, shows the typical architecture of early 20th century bicycling gas lamps: a central body with double tank - one, above, for water, and one, below, as carbide reservoir -, on which a large round reflector with an opening glass door is mounted, both to shield and concentrate the flame glowing from the burner. Conceived for a stirrup installation on the bike's head tube, the lamp was fitted on the back with a double wishbone suspension, for better absorbing the roughness of the terrain, while, for adjusting the light intensity, it featured a graduated butterfly valve on the head (with click positions from 1 to 6). Older than a century (the article appears on “La Française” catalogue 1913/14!), the lantern reports a certain oxidization at the bracket, spread tin soldered repairs, a double crack on the glass and ceramic burner tip – see photos -, but preserves intact all the allure of the pioneer era it comes from: an extraordinary piece, a real time machine with next stop Belle Époque!
