"LUXOR" Bicycle / Motorcycle / Carriage Candle Taillight / Lamp - With Red Glasses - Établissements Louis Messner - '20s

Wonderful candle bicycle lamp of French production, dating back to the 1920s. Produced by the industries of bicycles and accessories Louis Messner of Paris, the lantern, of blacked steel, features a screw-on handle, inside of which the candle was housed. The central body, instead, is made up of a cylindrical chamber, with a bayonet mount and a screw, on the back, for the attachment to the bike frame, and a round door, of riveted and seamed brass, on the front, for candle ignition and inspection: the amazing red polished glass, held in place by a retaining spring, as well as the two smaller ones on the sides, suggest us that the light, designed at the dawn of modern traffic codes, was intended as taillight, for bicycles, as well as motorcycles or carriages. On the top of the lamp, at last, a finely crafted chimney, with holes and vents, embossed «”LUXOR”» on its head, served as hot fumes exhaust. In very good general conditions, except for slight oxidation marks on some points - see photos -, the article, ferreted out in an early 1920s catalogue of the company F. Simon of Troyes, preserves, apart from its intact polished lens, magnificent colors, and all the fascination of an ancient time, a time in which plastics, batteries and LEDs were still to come!
