US Army āPacket First-Aid Field Brown Dressing Carlisle Modelā - Aluminium Foil and Waxed Cardboard Wrapping - WWII
Introduced in 1943 to save on war strategic metals, this āeconomyā version of the Carlisle first aid packet, issued to the US Army, saw the sterile gauze wrapped inside a laminated aluminium foil, in its turn inserted in a double waxed cardboard protection. Devoid, on the inside, of the sulfanilamide shaker-top envelope to be found in the previous variants, this generation of the kit brought in a new bandage type, still in linen, but brownish in color (hence, the designation of Field Brown Dressing). Produced by the historical Janesville Cotton Mills, in Wisconsin, the specimen for sale presents itself in very good general conditions, with a curiosity: a name - apparently in Greek - carved on the outside cardboard container (it seems Ā«ĪĪĪĪĪĪĪĀ»), detail, which could relate the piece to the Greek Civil War (1946-1949), and to the huge military support guaranteed by the USA to the anti-communist troops. A greatly interesting find, for all collectors of WWII US militaria and Cold War memorabilia.
